Burgos is a city of art, history, and a mind-blowing museum. Plus a stunning gothic cathedral!

I could stay in Burgos for a week. The Museum of Human Evolution blew me away. I spent 3 hours there. I would have stayed longer, but they were closing. It shows all the know iterations of human evolution. There are are 21 pre-Homo Sapien species. There was a copy of Darwin’s original Origin of the Species and I walked through a replica of The Beagle, the ship he sailed on to South America when he suddenly realized that life on earth was evolving. There’s a huge dig in Atapuerca where I’s stayed the night before and I was hoping for a bus tour. Sadly, the tours were cancelled due to Covid.

There was an interview with the head of the archeological dig in Atapuerca talking about finding the first human remains there in 1976. He didn’t talk about the the scientific importance or anything technical; he described how he felt. He described the feeling in his stomach and and his chest. He described his awe. He talked about how that moment of discovery felt. It was so, so moving.
