THE HALFWAY POINT
I walked past the halfway point in Carrion de Los Condes yesterday, though some say it’s actually in the next town of Sahagun. Distances can be a little vague on the Camino. There are online Camino forums where you can read passionate arguments about the location of the exact halfway point. I am not a halfway nerd. I’ll accept any halfway point and celebrate all of them! I do know that there’s a church in Sahagun where I can get a halfway certificate. I’m definitely going for that!
As I get closer to Santiago I see changes along the way. There are now depictions of St. James on the churches. You can always recognize him by the shell symbol. It looks like an umbrella over him. And there are so many more pilgrims now! A lot of people start the walk far later than the Pyrenees. They may have done the first part another year, walk for a week each year. All signs say the distance to Santiago now. They used to mostly say the distance to the next town. I’m in the 300’s in the km to go! I think the last sign said 397km to Santiago. Where I began in St. Jean Pied de Port I was about 800km from Santiago.
